Lost Planet takes place on a planet of glaciers and monstrous beings called Akrid. Humans struggle for survival in this harsh land, with people calling themselves Snow Pirates who must navigate Vital Suits through hostile ice-covered environments. The main character Wayne, was once rescued by the Snow Pirates, and having lost his memory only recalls his father dying at the hands of the Akrid.

The game plays out in third person perspective for a single campaign, Multiplayer modes add to the value of Lost Planet by allowing players to take part in intense team battles via the Xbox Live.
